HISTORY: Joe Borrell (B-6/21/1892, D-12/31/1978) was born in New York, but made his home in Philadelphia. Borrell fought as a middleweight from 1911 until 1926. During his career he fought and lost for the middleweight title to George Chip, but fought many of the greats in the division including Harry Greb, Harry Lewis, Joe Grim, Leo Houck, Jack Blackburn and Frank Mantell. When his boxing career ended Borrell became a police officer rising to the rank of captain. He died at age 86 in 1978.
