On March 4, 1968 Joe Frazier and Buster Mathis fought at Madison Square Garden in New York for the vacant New York version of the World Heavyweight Title (available after Muhammad Ali was stripped of the title for refusing military induction). Frazier was able to avenge his loss as an amateur to Mathis and stopped him in the 11th round. In the co-feature Nino Benvenuti won a 15 round decision over Emile Griffith with the World Middleweight Title at stake.
