GAVILAN, KID-JOHNNY SAXTON ORIGINAL WIRE PHOTO (1954)

On October 20, 1954 at Convention Hall in Philadelphia welterweight champion Kid Gavilan defended his title against Johnny Saxton. Saxton won a unanimous 15 round decision and the title. According to Nat Fleischer in The Ring (January 1955, pages 8-9) the referee showed favorism, frequently warning Gavilan against holding, whereas Saxton was mainly to blame. It was an extremely dull fight, with scarcely any action for the first eight rounds. Offered here is an original wire photo taken on August 26, 1954 in Philadelphia depicting the two fighters undergoing a pre fight physical.
