JOHNSON, JACK-JIM JEFFRIES NEWSPAPER (JULY 4, 1910)

On July 4, 1910 in Reno, Nevada Jack Johnson defended his World Heavyweight Title against former undefeated champion James Jeffries in one of the most celebrated fights of all time. Despite the public clamor for Jeffries to end his retirement and end the reign of the first African-American heavyweight champion Johnson dominated the fight from the outset. Johnson's superior skill, size, and athletic ability combined with the 5 year layoff Jeffries took before the fight resulted in a completely one sided affair with Johnson stopping the "Great White Hope" in the 15th round. Offered here is an original issue of the San Antonio Light dated July 4, 1910 declaring "JOHNSON WINS."
This is an original, 4 page newspaper which is illustrated and which almost exclusively covers the fight. Dated the same day as the fight, July 4, 1910. Jeffries is pictured on cover with other pictures of Johnson and the men who trained Jeffries. Center folds with slight separation at fold, but no paper loss. Some edge chipping. Page browning from aging. Exceptionally rare issue which includes pre fight predictions and stories on the fighters. 17" x 21 1/2."
