HISTORY: On June 11, 1952 Jake LaMotta continued his comeback moving up to the Light Heavyweight class against rugged Bob Murphy. LaMotta avenged an earlier defeat at the hands of Murphy winning a unanimous ten round decision at Olympia Stadium in Detroit.
"Jake LaMotta barged past Irish Bob Murphy's left hooks in a savage 9th and 10th round comeback assault to win a 10-round unanimous decision tonight before a near-sellout crowd of some 16,000 fans. Murphy's swinging left hooks and uppercuts kept Jake backing up and wary early in the fight. From the first round Murphy exploded his hooks and in the 3rd round opened a cut on Jake's right cheekbone but his handlers patched it up. For eight rounds Jake had vainly tried to solve Murphy's puzzling southpaw style, but in the 9th he backed Murphy into a corner and exploded two lefts against Bob's jaw, rocking him backwards. Again in the 10th Jake jolted Murphy, with the crowd on its feet roaring. Rarely has Jake scored a more dramatic victory in Detroit, his lucky city." -Associated Press
Post-fight comment
"I was really in shape tonight. I weighed six or seven pounds more last year and I wasn't in as good condition. That was the big difference." -Jake LaMotta, comparing this bout to their first fight.
