On January 14, 1921 at Madison Square Garden in New York lightweight champion Benny Leonard fought Ritchie Mitchell. Leonard struggled in the first round, but had clear sailing after that and stopped Mitchell in the 6th round. Mitchell was floored three times with Leonard down once, in the first round. The fight was for the Benefit for the American Committee for Devastated France. There was an attendance of 13,000. Offered here is an original wire photo showing the two fighters posing with referee John Haukop before the start of the fight.
