Joe Louis was born on May 13, 1914 in Lafayette, Alabama. On June 22, 1937 he won the World Heavyweight Title from James J. Braddock. Louis held the title longer than any man in boxing history, a record which still stands today. In addition to Braddock Louis had victories over Jack Sharkey, Primo Carnera, Max Schmeling, Max Baer, Jersey Joe Walcott, Billy Conn, Tony Galento and Tami Mauriello. He retired after losing to Rocky Marciano on October 26, 1951. His final record was 63-3. Offered here is a magnificent original wire photograph of a young Joe Louis as he looked in the late 1930's.
