Peter Maher was born on March 16, 1896 in Gunnode Tuam, Galway, Ireland. His first professional fight was a win over C.Arthur on March 18, 1887. He won a claim to the Heavyweight Championship on November 11, 1895 after defeating Steve O'Donnell. During his career he also fought Tom Sharkey, Bob Fitzsimmons, Joe Choynski, Jack Bonner, Joe Butler and Philadelphia Jack O'Brien. Offered here is an antique large format photograph of Peter Maher.
This is a first generation, large format photograph of Maher taken at the height of his career. In full fight pose. The photo is on an ornate, antique mount which has been matted. Some water damage to the matte which does not affect the photo. No creases or tears. Slight fading. 7 1/4" x 9 1/4" on a mount of 11" x 13 1/2." Extremely rare in this size.
