HISTORY: Charlie Mitchell was born on November 24, 1861 in Birmingham, England. He was a heavyweight contender in the 1870's and 1880's. His first professional fight was a win over Andy Gray on January 1, 1877. On February 7, 1890 he won the British Heavyweight Title defeating the legendary Jem Mace. Mithchell faced many significant heavyweights during his career including Jake Kilrain, John L. Sullivan, Frank Slavin, Mike Cleary, Dominick McCaffrey and Jim Corbett. He retired after losing to Steve O'Donnell on May 25, 1896 with a final record of 30-3-14. Charlie Mitchell passed away in 1918. FULL DESCRIPTION: This is an original Victorian era, hand woven silk Stevensgraph of Charlie Mitchell produced by Thomas Stevens in 1888. Stevensgraph as a title was invented by Thomas Stevens and first appears on the backing paper for his bookmarks in 1876. He called his factory "The Stevengraph Works", and later referred to his woven silk pictures in the same way when they first appeared in 1879. Includes the names of Sullivan and the producer on mount. Mount has some toning and minor edge wear. The silk itself is bold and clean. Toning and discoloration on back. Magnificent hand woven silk of the great Charlie Mitchell. 5 1/4" x 7."
