Luis Federico Thompson ( Colon , Panama , December 19 of 1927 - Merlo , Province of Buenos Aires , Argentina , 8 of January of 2010 ) was a boxer Panama to welterweight who settled in Argentina, where it was nationalized, who won the titles of Argentine and South American champion in its category. In 1948 he debuted as a professional in Panama and in 1951 won the lightweight title by beating Wilfredo Brewster. He traveled to Buenos Aires to face the local boxer José María Gatica in the Luna Park on July 12, 1952, losing by knockout in 8 rounds and decided to settle in Argentina, where he won the title of Argentine champion in 1959 by defeating Cirilo Gil . On October 6, 1962 achieved in the Luna Park stadium South American welterweight title by beating Jorge Peralta and the following year he retired from professional practice. Had an extensive racing career with 177 professional fights which earned 148 (74 of them by knockout), lost 15 and drew 14. Only an Argentine boxer ( Andrés Selpa with 218 meetings) surpasses in number of battles in the history of boxing there. His coaches were Oscar Casanovas and Victor Arnotén and his career is especially remember their wins against Don Jordan, Gaspar Ortega, Jorge Fernandez, Cirilo Gil and Juan C. Rivero. In 1959 he beat the then world champion welterweight, American Don Jordan, by knockout in the fourth round and gained access to a fight for the world welterweight title which took place December 10, 1960 in New York , opportunity he lost on points to the champion, the Cuban boxer Benny Paret , who that year had drawn. In 1959 he was awarded the Prize Olimpia de Oro. On January 8, 2010, after a long illness, died in hospital of Libertad in Merlo, where he was hospitalized.
