James J. Jeffries was born on April 15, 1875 in Carroll, Ohio. He won the World Heavyweight Title on June 9, 1899 from Bob Fitzsimmons. He initialy retired undefeated in 1905 posting career victories over James Corbett, Tom Sharkey as well as Robert Fitzsimmons. He retired after losing to Jack Johnson on July 4, 1910, his only loss, with a final record of 18-1-2 with 15 KO's. Offered here is an original antique photograph of James Jeffries selling oranges to raise money for earthquake victims in San Francisco in 1906.
This is an original, first generation, large format photograph of Jeffries standing in the back of a wagon selling oranges for earthquake victims. the caption at bottom of photo reads, "Historical photo shows James J.Jeffries selling oranges to raise for for 1906 San Francisco earthquake disaster. (Big Jeff is one wearing striped shirt.) Photo coutesy of J.Olmos collection." Large chip in upper right corner. Some spot damage on left side. Image remains fairly sharp with some slight fading. Framed in period frame. 14" x 17."
