Matty Matthews was born William R. Matthews on July 13, 1873 in New York. He began his professional boxing career in 1894. Matthews was a clever boxer who met most of the top men in his weight class during his career and had an impressive record against this talented opposition. He won the Welterweight Championship of the World by defeating Rube Ferns on October 16, 1900. Mattthews defeated such men as "Mysterious" Billy Smith, Eddie Connolly, James "Rube" Ferns, Bobby Dobbs, Austin Gibbons, Mike Leonard, Owen Zeigler, Stanton Abbott, Mike Farragher, "Philadelphia" Tommy Ryan, Frank Garrard, Nick Collins, Tommy Broderick, Paddy Fenton, George "Mystery" Kerwin, Charley "Rough House" Burns, Otto Sieloff, Isadore Strauss, Dan McConnell, Billy Payne, Patsy Sweeney and William "Kid" McPartland. He concluded his career in 1908 with a final mark of 56-24-18. Matty Matthews passed away on December 6, 1948. This is an original stone lithographic poster done by Metropolitan of New York and carrying their stamp in lower left corner. Advertisement at bottom for his appearances was added to poster. Mounted on board. Not creased or torn. Exhibits surface wear. Slight fading from age. Edge wear. 20" x 35 1/2."
