On February 23, 1925 at Recreation Park in San Francisco Joe Benjamin and Jack Silver met in the first of the elimination bouts for the lightweight championship. Benjamin defeated Silver by ten round decision. Former welterweight champion Jack Britton and heavyweight Floyd Johnson worked with Benjamin to get him ready for the fight.
