HISTORY: On November 19, 1973 at Palais des Sports Porte de Versailles, Paris XV, Paris, France former world welterweight and world middleweight champion Emile Griffith fought Tony Mundine in the featured bout. Mundine won a unanimous 12 round decision. "Emile Griffith and the big crowd at the Palais Des Sports did not agree with the unanimous decision Tony Mundine won Monday night over the 35 year old former champion in a 12 round bout. Mundine moved more easily, used an effective left jab and uppercut and kept Griffith far away in the first five rounds with more skill and patience than he was thought to have. Griffith began getting around Mundine's reach advantage in the 6th round and kept a clear advantage into the 9th, but Mundine was able to dominate thereafter. Mundine, the Australian, had the advantage of 12 fewer years, 2 1/2 inches in height and more than two pounds over Griffith." -Associated Press. The unofficial AP scorecard did not disclose an exact score but stated that it had Mundine the winner by two points. Post fight comments: "Yes, I think he's one of the top middleweights around. He's good, but I think I won. Look how the crowd reacted." -Emile Griffith. "After the 3rd round I felt I could have knocked him out. But I didn't want to take any risks and I just protected my lead." -Tony Mundine. "He's a very good fighter, but Emile had him doubled up with body punches. I don't know what in hell these European judges look for, but they sure don't see my man's work inside." -Gil Clancy, Griffith's co-manager.
