Archie Moore was born on December 13, 1913 in Benoit, Mississippi. He won the World Light Heavyweight Title from Joey Maxim on December 17, 1952. Moore fought memorable fights with Rocky Marciano, Floyd Patterson, Harold Johnson and Cassius Clay among others. He retired after an exhibition match with Nap Mitchell on August 27, 1965 with a final record of 183-22-9 with 1 no contest and 129 KO's. Offered here is an original award given to Archie Moore by the Boxing Writers' Association.
This is the original boxing writers' award given to former light heavyweight champion Archie Moore for his achiement in boxing. Circa 1950's while he was still world champion. The award features a raised seal for the helms Athletic Foundation. This wooden plaque reads, "HELMS ATHLETIC FOUNDATION SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA BOXING WRITERS ASSOCIATION AWARD HONORING ARCHIE MOORE AWARD OF MERIT FOR NOTEWORTHY ACHIEVEMENT IN BOXING." Wooden plaque with no noticeable flaws on the front except some minor scratches. On the reverse slight chipping. The plaque was done by Perma Plaque and their label is on the reverse, but the address is without a zip code. Postal zip codes started in the early 1960's thus dating the plaque and award to the 1950's. 14 1/2" x 17 1/2." Awards of great champions are extremely rare. Purchased directly from Archie Moore on a visit to his home in September, 1992. Letter of authenticity from Craig Hamilton of josportsinc.com who purchased the item from Archie Moore.
