RAMAGE, LEE & JIMMY MCLARNIN WIRE PHOTO (1936)

Lee Ramage (1910-1991), a heavyweight with a lightning left jab, had a 76-12 record and ranked as high as Number 5 in the world as a heavyweight in the 1930s. Although a natural light-heavyweight, he fought Joe Louis twice in 1934 and 1935. Ramage was ahead on points in the eighth round of their first fight in Chicago before Louis shattered the challenger’s upper left arm and scored a knockout. The lanky Ramage won Golden Gloves titles while at San Diego High School and later became California State light-heavyweight champ. Also an outstanding semi-pro baseball infielder, he taught boxing at San Diego State and for the Navy during World War II. Offered here is an original wire photo taken on April 4, 1936 depicting Ramage in training for his fight with Kingfish Levinsky. Ramage is shown with Pop Foster and lightweight Jimmy McLarnin.
