On July 11, 1949 at Municipal Stadium in Philadelphia welterweight champion Sugar Ray Robinson defended his title against capable Kid Gavilan of Cuba. Robinson won a 15 round unanimous decision. "The contest was a most interesting and satisfying one. Gavilan's performance was such as to make Ray admit that he feared to take chances. In the fourth round Sugar Ray suffered a cut over the right eye that bled throughout the bout..For the first six rounds it was anybody's fight..But after the sixth, there was not doubt about Ray (having the better of it)." (The Ring, September 1949, pp. 10-11.). Offered here is an original wire photo of Sugar Ray Robinson and his trainer George Gainsford taken at Robinson's training camp in Pompton Lakes, new Jersey on June 29, 1949 as he prepared for this fight.
