HISTORY: On July 28, 1930 at Wimbledon Stadium in London, United Kingdom heavyweights Young Stribling and Phil Scott fought in the featured bout. Stribling knocked Scott out in the 2nd round. Stribling's hand was injected with novocaine an hour before the bout. (He had injured his hand before meeting Otto von Porat the previous month, and had had a local anesthetic injected into his left hand before that bout.) Scott was knocked down in the 2rd round, and his performance was considered a "fiasco." An International Newsreel photo reported that this bout was for the European Heavyweight Title, but it was an elimination bout. Scott was down four times in the 1st round, with the bell saving him at the count of '4'. He was counted out at 2:35 of the 2nd round. The crowd at Wembley Stadium was estimated at 45,000, which was said to be the largest crowd ever to see a boxing contest in England. So impressed were they by Stribling's performance, the London Daily Express stated in their paper, "Stribling should now finish his ring life as acknowledged heavyweight champion."
