HISTORY: Rubin "Hurricane" Carter was and continues to be one of the great figures of controversy in the history of boxing. Never a champion, but recognized as one of the dangerous middleweight contenders of the 1960's his career was cut short when he stood accused and later convicted of murder in New Jersey. His life has been recently portrayed in film in the movie HURRICANE starring Denzel Washington.
In 1962 Carter applied for a boxing license in the State of New York. This prompted an inquiry by the New York State Athletic Commission to the Paterson, New Jersey Police Department to gain information about Carter's previous arrest. His police record was supplied indicating an arrest for assault and robbery.
Offered here is the original information request letter from the New York State Athletic Commission, the Paterson Police Department response letter and a stamped copy of Carter's police record.
FULL DESCRIPTION: First is an original letter from the New York Athletic Commission dated March 14, 1962. Has two holes atop not affecting the text. Has original folds. Minor edge wear. Stamped by both the commission and Paterson Police Department. Second, a letter from the City Of Paterson Police Department which includes the original folds and two holes atop not affecting the text. Both letters are 8 1/2" x 11." Third is the arrest record of Rubin Carter including charges. Two holes atop. Clean. 5 1/2" x 8 1/2." Also includes the original mailing envelope from the Paterson Police Department date stamped March 17, 1962.
