GAVILAN, KID-JOHNNY SAXTON WIRE PHOTO (1954-14TH ROUND)

On October 20, 1954 at Convention Hall in Philadelphia welterweight champion Kid Gavilan defended his title against tough Johnny Saxton. Saxton won a 15 round unanimous decision and the title. According to Nat Fleischer in The Ring, January 1955, pages 8-9, the referee showed favorism, frequently warning Gavilan against holding, whereas Saxton was mainly to blame. It was an extremely dull fight, with scarcely any action for the first eight rounds. Offered here is an original wire photo which depicts 14th round action during this fight.
