Regular price $65.00

HISTORY: On November 21, 1958 at Madison Square Garden in New York middleweights Rory Calhoun and Ralph "Tiger" Jones fought in the featured bout. Jones prevailed winning a unanimous ten round decision.  "Unranked Ralph (Tiger) Jones, a 9-5 underdog, won a unanimous decision over 10th rated Rory Calhoun of White Plains, N.Y., in their TV-radio 10 rounder at MSG, after slugger Calhoun had been penalized his best round, the 8th, on a low-blow foul. 30 year old Jones was awarded the verdict on a rounds basis, after referee Ray Miller's 8th round forfeiture ruling for a low left hook. Miller had warned Rory for low blows in the 5th. Jones did force the action as he marched forward persistently and he landed a lot of leather; but it was Calhoun who did the harder punching. Rory's combined body-head slugging had Jones back on his heels or groggy in the 1st, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th." -United Press International. Promoter Norman Rothchild claimed to have offered Carmen Basilio $35,000 to fight Jones at the Syracuse Memorial Auditorium after this bout. Unofficial scorecards-UPI - 6-4 Calhoun. Ringside poll of 14 sportswriters showed 8 scoring the bout for Calhoun, 5 for Jones and 1 having it even. Post fight comment-"I forced the fight in every round and beat him. And now I want a fight with Basilio to clinch a shot at Sugar Ray Robinson's title. Don't forget I beat Robinson 3 years ago and he'd never give me a return bout." -Ralph (Tiger) Jones. Offered here is an original wire photo depicting 6th round action.
