On March 16, 1973 at Madison Square Garden in New York the finals of the New York Golden Gloves was held. In the novice division Howard Davis, Jr. defeated Carlos Gonzalez and Gerry Cooney (fighting as a 16 year old middleweight) defeated Larry Demic to win their respective titles.
