HISTORY: On May 18, 1949 at the State Fair Ground Coliseum in Syracuse, NY future world middleweight champion Jake LaMotta fought local favorite Joey DeJohn in the featured bout. LaMotta stopped DeJohn in the 8th round. "Jake LaMotta of New York, who scored a TKO in the 8th round over Joey DeJohn last night, planned today to begin training soon for his proposed middleweight title fight with Marcel Cerdan at Detroit on June 15. The largest indoor sports crowd in Syracuse history saw LaMotta floor DeJohn of Syracuse twice in the 7th round and three times in the 8th. In the early rounds the fans shook the girders of the State Fair Coliseum with their yells when DeJohn forced the fighting and tried desperately to score a knockout. He ran out of gas in the 7th session. The referee stopped the bout, according to commission rules, when DeJohn was on the floor for the 3rd time in the 8th." -United Press. The gate of $31,971 and the attendance of 8,403 broke the record of the largest attendance and gate for an indoor sporting event in Syracuse history. On the undercard future world champion Carmen Basilio knocked out Johnny Clemons in the 3rd round.
