HISTORY: On March 15, 2008 at the Mandalay Bay Casino in Las Vegas WBC Super Featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez defended his title against Manny Pacquiao. Pacquiao prevailed winning a 12 round split decision and the title. Pacquiao was guaranteed $3 million and Marquez $1.5 million. There was a crowd of 11,061. Marquez wobbled Pacquiao late in the second round with a left hook. Pacquiao knocked Marquez down with a hard left late in the third round and stunned him again as the bell rang. Pacquiao suffered an abrasion near the right eye in the fourth round. Marquez was cut on the outside of his right eye by an accidental headbutt in the seventh round. Pacquiao hurt Marquez with a left at the start of the tenth round and hurt him again moments later with a combination. Marquez finished strong with a big twelfth round, after which both fighters were hoisted onto the shoulders of team members at the final bell, holding their arms aloft in victory. Pacquiao landed 172 of 511 punches (34 percent), and Marquez connected on 157 of 619 (25 percent). HBO PPV Executive Mark Taffet reported that this fight generated a record 400,000 buys, representing $20.2 million in sales. The results were the most for any pay-per-view telecast in a weight division below welterweight in boxing history. This has since been surpassed by the 850,000 buys generated by Pacquiao's junior welterweight bout with Ricky Hatton on May 2, 2009. Round-by-round punch statistics showed that Pacquiao outlanded Marquez in six rounds, Marquez outlanded Pacquiao in five rounds, and the two landed evenly in one round—the third round, in which Pacquiao sent Marquez to the canvas.
