HISTORY: On March 10, 1972 at Madison Square Garden in New York light heavyweights Mike Quarry and Tommy Hicks headlined the boxing show. Quarry outboxed Hicks and won a 10 round unanimous decision. "Mike Quarry never attended college, but he was prepared for the lesson schoolteacher Tommy Hicks wanted to give him. Quarry, the world's No. 2 light heavyweight, hammered out a one-sided unanimous 10 round decision at MSG Friday night. Quarry deftly avoided his opponent's rushes and methodically beat him to the punch. The 21 year old kept Hicks off balance with a peppery left jab and closed his right eye in the 9th round and opened a small cut on his foe's left eyebrow in the 5th." -Associated Press. Unofficial AP scorecard - 8-1-1 Quarry. This bout was part of three 10 rounders on the Madison Square Garden bill. The other two was Jimmy Young vs. Randy Neumann and Harold Weston vs. Chu Chu Malave. Post fight comments: "I knew he'd come straight in like that and I was ready. He's aggressive and I knew he'd come in after me. That's why I had no trouble outboxing him." -Mike Quarry. "I expected him to be a mover, but I couldn't cut him off. I tried my best, but we'll be back. I'm not satisfied with my performance." -Tommy Hicks.
