HISTORY: On October 19, 1955 at Cincinnati Gardens in Cincinnati, Ohio world lightweight champion Wallace "Bud" Smith defended his title against former champion Jimmy Carter. Smith prevailed winning a unanimous 15 round decision.

Wallace (Bud) Smith of Cincinnati kept his lightweight crown Wednesday night on an unanimous 15 round decision over ex-champion Jimmy Carter of New York in a thrilling return bout. Carter tried to force the fighting in the early rounds and tried to make Smith back-pedal so that he could hit Bud with long rights to the body and chin. But Smith refused to play Carter's game. He took the offensive and was successful in many of the rounds in forcing the ex-champion to go backwards and break up his shuffling attack. There were no knockdowns but Smith almost went to the deck three times in the 13th round when he was staggered by a left hook and then bombarded about the ring. But the excellent condition of Bud enabled him to fight on. Carter also gave a demonstration of ruggedness. He suffered a reopening of a cut on his right eyebrow in the 3rd round. And that eye was closed tightly shut by the end of the 9th session." -United Press. Unofficial AP scorecard - 144-141 Carter. There was confusion as there appeared to be a problem with Judge Joe Blink's card. Originally scored 144-140 for Carter, it was instead announced as 140-140 giving Smith a majority decision. After the fight, Commissioner Paul Cain of the Cincinnati Boxing Commission announced to the media that Blink's card was retabulated again, this time giving Smith a 143-139 edge and a unanimous decision.. Post fight comment: "I don't care how they add it. I voted for Carter, 144-140. It's still split as far as I'm concerned." - Judge Joe Blink. Offered here is an original wire photo depicting both fighters weighing in before the fight.
