On April 14, 1990 at The Mirage in Las Vegas IBF Middleweight champion Michael Nunn defended his title against Marlon Starling. Nunn prevailed winning a 12 round majority decision. From The New York Times: Michael Nunn retained his International Boxing Federation middleweight title when he won a majority decision over Marlon Starling tonight at the Mirage here. Judges Glenn Hamada (118-110) and Art Lurie (117-111) voted for Nunn. The third judge, Gary Merritt, scored the bout a draw, 114-114. The bout was tactical to the point of boredom, with the fighters landing more often on each other's gloves than on their bodies. The crowd booed the inaction and the decision. Nunn weighned 160 pounds while Starling came in at 158 pounds. While Nunn entered the bout undefeated in 34 fights - 23 by knockout -he was seeking to overcome a reputation for inaction. As a pro, Nunn has proved to be an elusive and quick-handed operative, but as that artful dodger he has been maligned for producing boring fights. In his last match, a 12-round decision over Iran Barkley in August, Nunn showed no appetite for the brawl for which Barkley - and the Reno crowd - was spoiling. After Barkley nailed him with a few hard punches early in the match, Nunn fought with a hit-and-run strategy that brought constant booing.
