LOUIS, JOE-BILLY CONN EXHIBITION FULL TICKET (1942)

On Monday, October 12, 1942 at Yankee Stadium in New York world heavyweight champion Joe Louis, now in the army, was scheduled to fight Billy Conn, also in the army, in a fight scheduled to raise money for the Army Emergency Relief during World War II. The fight was cancelled on September 26, 1942. The Secretary for War (Mr. Stimson) summarily cancelled the arrangements for the heavyweight fight between Joe Louis and Billy Conn on October 12. Explaining that the standards and interests of the Army would not permit the contest to be carried out. Mr. Stimson said that Sgt. Barrow a/k/a Joe Louis and Cp] Conn would be returned immediately to their military duties. There was no reflection upon the principals Furthermore, the Army appreciated that Louis in the past had generously contributed his efforts to the Army without return. Following Mr. Stimson's announcement Louis and Conn offered to fight gratis to earn 4500.000 for Army emergency relief. The promoter, Mike Jacobs agreed to handle the bout free if he were permitted to live up to his contract concerning broadcasting. However, according to the Associated Press of America, a spokesman for Mr. Stimson has declared that the fight will not be held.
