On April 12, 1996 at Atlantis Casino in Cupecoy Plaza, Saint Maarten WBC welterweight champion Pernell "Sweet Pea" Whitaker defended his title against Wilfredo Rivera. Whitaker won a close 12 round split decision. Whitaker was a 5-2 favorite. Rivera was rated #1 by the WBC. Whitaker and Rivera fought before 1,000 invited casino guests on the Caribbean island of St. Maarten. Whitaker landed 187 of 511 punches (37%) and Rivera connected on 193 of 686 (28%). HBO judge Harold Lederman scored the fight 115-113 for Rivera. Michael Katz of the New York Daily News scored the fight 116-113 for Whitaker. Whitaker blamed his poor performance on the flu.
