Dave Barry was a notable boxing referee best remembered as the referee for the famous "Long Count" fight between Gene Tunney and Jack Dempsey on September 22, 1927 in which critics pointed out that Barry gave Tunney an extended period of time to recover from a knockdown by Dempsey. Born in Montreal, Canada on September 22, 1883 Barry began his career as a referee on December 29, 1908 in the featherweight fight between Abe Attell and Biz Mackey. In his career he refereed fights of Freddy Welsh, Abe Attell, Marvin Hart, Tony Canzoneri, Primo Carnera among others. His last fight was the Barney Ross-Goldie Hess fight on November 11, 1932. Dave Barry passed away on August 26, 1936 at age 52. Offered here is an original photograph of Dave Barry which he has boldly signed and inscribed in ionk.
