On January 18, 1979 at Madison Square Garden in New York world light welterweight champion Antonio Cervantes fought Miguel Montilla in the main event. Cervantes won a unanimous 15 round decision in defense of his title. On the undercard former champion Alfonso Zamora won a ten round split decision over Luis Rosario.
