On October 23, 1890 at the Gladstone Club in Providence, Rhode Island world featherweight champion George Dixon defended his title against tough Johnny Murphy. Dixon prevailed finally knocking Murphy out in the 4oth round of a fight in which the participants wore 2 ounce gloves. Offered here is a rare, complete, Articles Of Agreement for this fight. The contract has been signed on the second page by Thomas H. Keenan for Johnny Murphy and by Hall Of Fame manager Tom O'Rourke for Dixon. The Articles lay out the terms which provided the fight date and venue ("within two hundred miles of Boston"), and purse ($1,500 a side).
This is a hand written, ink, two page Articles Of Agreement. Written on lined paper. Bold ink and bold ink signatures in fountain pen. Paper has been folded. Edge wear on right side with a small border piece missing with very slight affect on one word. Otherwise clean, with only slight discoloration from aging. Exceptionally rare and important fight contract. 8 1/4" x 10 1/2."
