Al Kaufmann was born on January 6, 1886 in San Francisco, California. He was a heavyweight contender during the early 1900's. During his career he has fought and defeated Philadelphia Jack O'Brien, Jack Twin Sullivan, "Fireman" Jim Flynn, and George Gardner. On Septemebr 9, 1909 he fought Jack Johnson for the heavyweight title and lost a ten round decision. Offered here is an original antique photograph of Al Kaufman dating to his fighting career.
This is an original, first generation mounted photograph of Kaufman in period dress. Photo has some light fading. The mount has some chipping and has been trimmed. Stamp of photographer Sommer Studio of Philadelphia in lower right corner. Some small holes on left edge outside of the image. Minor soiling. 7 5/8" x 9 1/2."
