On August 22, 1925 at Ascot Park in Los Angeles, California flyweights Frankie Genaro and Fidel La Barba fought for the vacant world flyweight title. La Barba prevailed winning a ten round decision and the title. The Flyweight World Title had been left vacant with the sudden death of Pancho Villa in July. This was the first title bout held in California since the state had legalized prize-fighting the previous November. LaBarba, just out of high school at this time, declared he would strenuously defend this title against all comers for one year before retiring to attend Stanford College. A year later, after winning the undisputed Flyweight World Title, he relinquished it to do just that: to attend Stanford College. Offered here is an original wire photo depicting the two fighters squaring off before the fight.
