: Sam Langford began his professional boxing career on January 13, 1902 with a 3 round victory over Jack McVicker. Known as "The Boston Tar Baby," Langford had one of the best records in boxing for a man denied a shot at a world title. He amassed victories over Joe Jeanette, Young Peter Jackson, Jim Flynn, Harry Wills, Dixie Kid, Philadelphia Jack O'Brien, Sam McVey, Gunboat Smith, and Kid Norfolk.
