On July 8, 1889 in Richburg, Mississippi World Heavyweight Champion, John L. Sullivan met and defeated challenger Jake Kilrain in what would be the last defense of his title in bare knuckles. This fight was fought under the grueling heat and scorching sun typical of summer in the south. The fight lasted 75 rounds before Kilrain was forced to submit. Offered here is an extremely rare poster of John L. Sullivan issued by the New York Illustrated News to commemorate his victory over Jake Kilrain.
This magnificent paper poster was issued as a special supplement by the New York Illustrated News. Dated in upper right corner, July 27, 1889. The poster pictures Sullivan in his famous bust pose with arms folded surrounded by his colors. The color is vivid with very little fading. Professionally linen backed. 28 1/2" x 36." Very minor surface wear. As fine a poster of Sullivan as champion as we have seen.
